JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team hosted The College of New Jersey at the Lincoln Park Tennis Courts for a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match this afternoon, Saturday, April 9. The Gothic Knights were highly competitive against the Lions in nearly every match, however TCNJ came away with the 8-1 win.
For the Green and Gold (3-5, 1-1 NJAC), third doubles was their tightest match in the first part of the day. Graduate student captain
Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) and junior
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) team up there, as usual, and jumped out to a 3-0 lead early on, and clung to a 4-3 advantage while holding serve. Unfortunately, the Lions (8-2, 2-0 NJAC) — who are ranked #13 as a team in the Northeast Regional Rankings — battled back to take the match 8-5. TCNJ would sweep doubles to take the early 3-0 lead.
In singles play, #1 junior
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) took a few games off her foe but fell, 6-2, 6-1. Clamor then dropped her match at second singles (6-0, 6-1) as the Lions clinched the victory. Freshman
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) was defeated at fifth singles next, although she put up a nice battle in the 6-1, 6-4 loss. Another rookie,
Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) put forth quite the effort at third singles, taking six games, but was defeated at #3, 6-2, 6-4. The penultimate match to come to an end was fourth singles, where another freshman in
Mila Gligorov (Milan, Italy/Collegio San Carlo) came close to the win, but fell 6-4, 7-5. Waugh closed out the day with a three-set victory at sixth singles, 7-5, 2-6, 10-2.
Up Next:
NJCU returns to action on Thursday, April 14, for another NJAC match, this time against Kean University. First-serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lincoln Park, and will also serve as Waugh's Senior Day match.
