JERSEY CITY, N.J. — On Thursday, May 19, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their annual Academic All-District Men's and Women's At-Large teams. Just after
New Jersey City University notched its first two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection since 2008, the Gothic Knights now have another just seven days later. Senior
Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) of the Jersey City men's tennis program is a First Team honoree for the second straight year, while junior
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) of NJCU women's tennis picks up her first-career Academic All-District accolades.
Both Green and Gold student-athletes are now officially nominated for Academic All-America consideration. Voting among the nation's Division III Sports Information Directors/Athletic Communicators will take place from May 24-June 1.
Bourghelle — who earned
Academic All-America Third Team honors last season to become NJCU's first AAA selection since 2012-13 and just the fourth ever in Jersey City history — was recently named the Male Thomas M. Gerrity Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the 2022 Gothics. He is a two-time First Team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) selection in both singles and doubles over his two full seasons with Jersey City. A two-year co-captain, Bourghelle was named NJAC Player of the Year in 2021 and led the Gothic Knights to the conference title in their first season following a 22-year hiatus for the varsity program. He was also named NJCU's Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year in 2021. On the court this season, Bourghelle was a perfect 8-0 in Division III singles play, primarily at #2 and 6-2 in DIII doubles play, all at #1. NJCU finished as the NJAC East Division runner-up in 2022.
Zorzan is also a two-time First Team All-NJAC selection in singles over her two seasons with the Gothic Knights and picked up First Team recognition in doubles alongside her sister, Sara, this season. After posting a 7-1 record in singles play last season, Zorzan put together 8-2 records against Division III opponents this season in both singles and doubles at the #1 position for NJCU. After an exit in the NJAC Quarterfinal Round in 2021, the Gothic Knights — led by Zorzan at the top — finished the regular-season second in the conference standings, won the NJAC Semifinal match 5-0 over Stockton University and finished the year as the conference runner-up.
