ROSEMONT, Pa. — Thanks to an overall team effort, the New Jersey City University women's volleyball team picked up its first victory of the 2022 season tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 6, on the road. The Gothic Knights swept host Rosemont College in three sets (25-17, 26-24, 25-12) as four different players had at least four kills in the match.
Jersey City (1-2) forced the Ravens (1-2) into 46 total errors on the night between receiving, serving, setting and attacking and used that advantage in the three-set sweep. Offensively, senior
Paola Toledo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Colegio Catolico San Rafael) once again led the way as the right side finished with a match-best nine kills and just two errors on 14 swings for a solid .500 hitting percentage.
Sophomore
Dayshia Espinosa (El Paso, Texas/Pebble Hills), junior
Ashley Jimenez (West New York, N.J./Memorial) and senior
Leah Seickendick (Hoboken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) all contributed six points apiece in the win. Jimenez and Seickendick each notched five kills and a solo block, while Espinosa had four error-less kills on nine swings to go with two aces and five digs. Junior setter
Sydney Lore (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led with a match-high total in assists for the third straight contest, dishing out 15 to go with a match-best three aces and five digs.
Defensively, senior liberos
Krista Bartko (Edison, N.J./Edison) and
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, N.J./Union) combined for 11 digs, with Bartko notching a match-best seven. As a team, NJCU combined for a .215 hitting percentage, compared to the Ravens' .053, including a -.172 performance in the third and final set.

Now nearly a week into the regular-season, the Gothic Knights finally commence action at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) this Thursday evening, Sept. 8, for a 6:00 p.m. home match against Saint Elizabeth University. NJCU has one five straight against the Eagles, dating back to 2016.
