Women's Volleyball Dominates St. Elizabeth in Straight Sets

Jimenez, Nguyendon Lead Overall Team Effort in Victory

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team opened up home play for the 2022 season tonight, Thursday, Sept. 8, and the Gothic Knights managed to get up to .500 following a dominant three-set sweep (25-12, 25-10, 25-10) at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) over Saint Elizabeth University.
 
As a team, NJCU (2-2) was put up an efficient .236 hitting percentage, while holding the Eagles (0-4) to a -.205 mark, including just eight kills and 17 errors. Individually, junior outside hitter Ashley Jimenez (West New York, N.J./Memorial) led the way with a match- and career-best 10 kills on 17 swings with just one error (.529) and added a pair of aces and a dig. Middle blockers senior Leah Seickendick (Hoboken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) and sophomore Dayshia Espinosa (El Paso, Texas/Pebble Hills) each recorded six kills each, the former notching the team's only block of the night and the latter notching three digs and two aces.
 
Junior setter Sydney Lore (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led all players in assists once again, which she has now done every match this season – she notched a match-high 24 assists to go with three digs and two aces. Senior libero Katrina Nguyendon (Union, N.J./Union) was dominant as a server on the night – she had an astounding 27 service attempts and led all players with a match-best and career-high-tying five aces to go with a team-high four digs.

Having played four matches, the Gothic Knights next face their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest of the season. NJCU travels to the Brick City on Tuesday night, Sept. 13, for a 7:00 p.m. clash with Rutgers-Newark in search of the program's first win over the Scarlet Raiders since a five-set win at the JMAC in 2017.
