Women's Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day on Saturday

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Day for its three graduating team members on Saturday, Oct. 21, on Coach Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC). The Gothic Knights hosted non-conference opponent Delaware Valley University today, but fell to the Aggies in three sets.

Prior to the match, NJCU (2-16), celebrated Senior Day for co-captain setter Katrina Nguyendon (Union, N.J./Union), middle blocker Ashley Jimenez (West New York, N.J./Memorial) and defensive specialist Olivia Sanchez (West New York, N.J./Memorial). Once things got going against Delaware Valley (10-11), the Gothic Knights fell behind in the first, but made a nice late run to put the pressure on. Trailing by nine at 20-11, NJCU cut it to five with a 7-3 run to make it 23-18 — Jimenez posted a kill and block during that run. A kill from junior co-captain hitter Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) made it 24-19, but the Aggies were able to take the first set 24-19.

The Green and Gold got off to a nice start in the second set, taking a 10-9 lead thanks in part to a couple of kills from sophomore hitter Marina Millett (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney). However, DelVal was able to open it up the rest of the set and take the 2-0 advantage with a 25-15 win.

The third set started off the same way, a 5-3 early advantage for NJCU thanks in part to a kill and a solo block from Jimenez. DVU went on another run to go up by seven at 15-8, but the Gothic Knights clawed right back into it the rest of the way, cutting it down to a two-point deficit at 19-17. Millett had a kill and an ace over that span, while sophomore hitter Kiki Lugo (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) added a pair of kills herself. Unfortunately, the Aggies were able to scratch out the 25-20 set win to take the match.

Highlights:
- Gonzalez led all players with a match-best nine kills, adding a pair of digs.
- Millett had six kills to go with eight digs and an ace.
- Jiminez finished the day with four kills, seven digs and two blocks.
- Rookie setter Scarlett Torres (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) led NJCU and was one off tying the match high with 14 assists to go with three digs and an ace.
- Nguyendon notched seven assists of her own to go with 10 digs and a pair of aces. She currently ranks ninth all-time in NJCU program history with 950 assists over her career.
- Rookie libero Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) 's13 digs were a match-high.
- Sanchez chipped in four digs on the day.
