Women's Volleyball Falls on the Road at Brooklyn

BROOKLYN — The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team faced off on the road tonight, Thursday, Oct. 26, against non-conference foe Brooklyn College. NJCU pushed the Bulldogs in each set, but ultimately fell in three (25-18, 26-24, 25-10).

NJCU (2-18) dropped behind early in the first against Brooklyn (10-11), trailing 7-1, but came all the way back to take a 13-12 lead and stayed within one point as late as an 18-17 deficit. Senior middle blocker Ashley Jimenez (West New York, N.J./Memorial) had three kills on five swings and a solo stuff in the set, while sophomore outside hitter Marina Millett (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) notched two kills and an ace. Senior co-captain Katrina Nguyendon (Union, N.J./Union) and freshman libero Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) each had seven digs apiece, but the Bulldogs eventually held on for the 25-18 set win following a 7-1 run to close it out.

Set two saw the Gothic Knights trail big once again to start, down 10-2 early on. However, NJCU dominated most of the remainder of the set and eventually took a 23-22 lead. Tied at 24-24, it was Brooklyn though that took the set, 26-24. Millett had three more kills to go with another ace, while junior co-captain right-side Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) had three kills of her own. The Bulldogs then took the third set to close out the match.

Highlights:
- Gonzalez led NJCU with six kills.
- Jimenez had five kills, a pair of solo blocks and three digs.
- Millett had five kills, as well, to go with two aces and six digs.
- Everett finished with a match-best 18 digs, followed by Nguyendon and her 16 digs.
- Rookie setter Scarlett Torres (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) led all players with 18 assists to go with an ace and two digs.
