Track Opens Indoor Season with Some Solid Performances at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's track & field squads kicked off their 2023-24 indoor seasons today, Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Wesleyan University Winter Invitational. Men's senior captain Jake Sisk (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) headlined the day by placing second overall in the 3,000-meter event with a time of 9:24.65, which places him third all-time in NJCU indoor program history in the event. For the women's side, senior captain Ayriana Young (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) recorded a personal record in the 400-meter dash to place third out of 13 sprinters with a time of 1:04.01.

For the men, some other top performances on the day include senior Jason Garcia (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson), who placed fourth overall out of eight runners in the 60-meter dash final with a time of 7.23. He also came in ninth out of 32 runners in the 200-meter dash at 23.79. Back in the 3,000m, senior captain Jaime Tlatelpa (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter) was just 10 seconds back of Sisk and placed fourth with a time of 9:34.43. Graduate student Adnan Kpodo (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) placed fourth overall in the mile event out of 12 runners with a time of 4:45.01. Finally, sophomore Sirell Clark (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter) notched PRs in both the shot put (10.26 meters) and weight throw (10.54 meters).

On the women's side of things, Young was joined at the 400m finish line by sixth-place Reyanna Henderson (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Two), who notched a time of 1:06.59. Another 3,000m performer for NJCU was senior Grace Sabaya (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson), who placed third out of 12 runners with a time of 11:53.60). Henderson, Young and Sabaya also teamed up with junior Ashley Adames (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) and the group placed second overall out of six teams in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:26.26. Finally, junior Shyanna Anson competed in the women's shot put, recording a toss of 7.96m to place 15th.
