Men's Tennis Falls to Division I NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's tennis team faced off with in-state Division I foe New Jersey Institute of Technology on Sunday evening, Feb. 26, on the road. The Gothic Knights fought hard against the Highlanders, but fell to NJIT 7-0.

Doubles play for Jersey City (3-1) against a Division I foe in NJIT (11-0) counts as one point (rather than three). NJCU dropped first and second doubles and put up a strong performance behind juniors Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) at third doubles before falling 7-5. Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, NJCU fell in third, fourth, fifth and sixth. However, second and first singles were standout matches. Ley dropped his first set at #2, but nearly won the second in a tiebreak — he lost the match 2-6, 7-6. Then, junior captain Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine), ranked #12 in Division III and #4 in the Northeast Region, dropped his first set (4-6) before coming back to even it up with a strong 6-2 win in the second. He eventually lost the match via a 10-point third-set tie break (10-6).
