Men's Wrestling Closes Season at 2023 Mideast Regionals

Gothic Knights Finish 15th of 21 Teams

ITHACA, N.Y. — The 2022-23 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships were hosted by #13 Ithaca College on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26. The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team had a strong day on Friday and entered Saturday with two wrestlers still alive for National Qualifying contention.

Senior captain Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), ranked #4 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) in the Mideast Region at 149 pounds, went 2-0 on Friday and earned himself a spot in the championship semifinals. His first match of the day on Saturday came against Nationally #15-ranked Matthew Beyer of Ithaca, but Johnson lost by a slim 3-2 decision. Moving over to the consolation bracket, Johnson unfortunately posted medical forfeits for his final two matches on the day and finished on the podium with sixth place at 149 pounds.

Freshman 165-pounder Jazz Bull (New Brunswick, N.J./New Brunswick), ranked #6 in the region in his weight class, started off his day on Sunday against Travis Jones of Ithaca in the consolation quarterfinals, but fell via all.Next, he wrestled in the seventh-place match against Matthew Kline of SUNY Brockport and defeated him via an excited 9-7 sudden victory.

These two finishes conclude the season for the Gothic Knights, who placed 15th overall out of 21 teams this past weekend. Overall, the tournament was won by #14 The College of New Jersey.
