Men's Tennis Notches Hard-Fought, 7-2 Win at Goucher

BALTIMORE — The New Jersey City University men's tennis team traveled down to Baltimore on Friday, March 17, and picked up a close 7-2 victory over Goucher College. NJCU swept doubles, 3-0, but needed tiebreakers at second and third. The Gothic Knights went up 5-0 to start singles play and clinched the overall match win, but there were still a couple of highly-competitive match-ups at second and fourth.

Jersey City (4-4) got things started at first doubles as the junior pair of Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) made quick work of their opponents from the Gophers (0-4), winning 8-0. Third doubles finished next as senior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) and junior Gerard Loras (Tortosa, Spain/Col·legi Diocesà Sagrada Família) fought hard for an 8-7(6) win in tiebreaking fashion. Not to be outdone, second doubles followed the exact same pattern to put NJCU up 3-0 in the match early, as sophomore Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas) and freshman Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria) also won, 8-7(6).

Needing just two more individual match victories to win the overall contest against Goucher, NJCU got things started quickly in singles play as the #12-ranked Teynie quickly won at #1 in straight, scoreless sets. Weiss then stepped in at sixth singles and clinched the match win for the Gothic Knights after topping his opponent, 6-2, 6-0. The Gophers won their first match at fifth singles, however Caro made it 6-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at third singles. Ley later eecked out a three-set tiebreak win at second singles, 6-7(5), 6-3, 10-6 to make it 7-1 before the final match at fourth singles went to Goucher, also via a three-set tiebreak.
