Men's Tennis Puts up Strong Performance in 6-3 Loss to Division I LIU

Teynie, Ley Each Go 2-0 Against the Sharks

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's tennis team opened up home play for the Spring portion of its 2022-23 season today, Tuesday, March 21. The Gothic Knights hosted Division I Long Island University at the Lincoln Park Tennis Courts and and nearly pulled off the victory over the Sharks, but fell by a final of 6-3.

To start it off, LIU (2-11) took an early 2-0 lead over NJCU (4-5), winning at third and second doubles — however freshman Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria) and sophomore Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas) were not far off in the 8-5 loss at second. Juniors Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) pulled off the 8-6 win at first doubles to close it out.

Fifth singles finished first, in favor of the Sharks, to put the visitors ahead 3-1, followed by an LIU win at third singles to make it 4-1. Fourth singles finished next and junior Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) fought hard in the three-set loss (6-3, 4-6, 6-1), which seeled the win for the Sharks, putting them up 5-1 at the time.

Junior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) finished next at sixth singles and nearly pulled out a victory. He dropped the first set 7-6 via an 8-6 tiebreak, only to come back and win the second set, 6-4. LIU won the final set, 6-3, to go up 6-1 in the overall match. Ley followed closely behind him with his second victory of the day, winning in three sets at second singles, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-2. Teynie closed out the afternoon with another win at first singles to also go 2-0 on the day, winning in three (6-4, 3-6, 7-5).
