JERSEY CITY, N.J. — For the 10th time in program history, and the second time in her career — and over the last six games — junior pitcher
Sidnie Dabbadie (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) of the New Jersey City University softball team has tossed a no-hitter. She helped lead the Gothic Knights to a home doubleheader split on Thursday, March 23, at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. NJCU defeated Saint Elizabeth University 4-0 in game one, before falling to the Eagles in game two by a final score of 2-0.
Game 1: NJCU 4, St. Elizabeth 0
As mentioned, NJCU (7-5) softball had not seen a no-hitter since
2019 before Dabbadie tossed the first one of her career back on March 7 down in South Carolina in an
8-0, five-inning win over Clarks Summit University. However, today, the junior righthander was on fire. Her bid for a perfecto was gone after the Eagles (6-4) led off the first game with a walk — she actually allowed a season-high five bases on balls in game one — which quite possibly took some of the pressure off early on. Either way, she followed that walk up with three strikeouts to end the inning.
Jersey City got things going offensively in the bottom of the second. Sophomore first base
Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) led off with a walk and then made her way over to second via a failed pickoff attempt. Two at-bats later with two outs, junior shortstop
Emily Tunney (Mays Landing, N.J./Oak Crest) collected her first RBI of the day with an infield single to third and Barrios came around to score, making it 1-0 early.
Dabbadie went 1-2-3 in the top of the third and her team backed her up in the home half with three more runs on five hits. Junior second base
Mariah Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) led off with a double and then hot-hitting sophomore catcher
Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) followed with a run-scoring double to right to make it 2-0. Sophomore third base
Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) reached on an infield single, sandwiched between two outs, to put runners on first and second for Barrios, and she plated Castro to make it 3-0. Junior designated player
Sam Miller (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) was next up and she singled through the right side to score Villanueva and make it 4-0.
Dabbadie, who finished with 10 strikeouts in game one, walked the leadoff hitter in the top off the fourth before sending the next three batters down on strikes. She got two more strikeouts in the top of the seventh before getting the final batter of the game to ground out to first, which seeled her second-career no-hitter.
Game 1 Highlights:
- Tunney was 2-for-3 with a RBI, while Castro was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, a RBI and a run.
- Both Villanueva sisters were 1-for-3 with a run scored. Mariah added a walk and her lone hit was a double.
- Barrios was 1-for-2 with a run, a walk and a RBI, while Miller was 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Game 2: St. Elizabeth 2, NJCU 0
This one saw the bats quiet down a bit for the Gothic Knights. Freshman
Yavely Marrero (Perth Amboy, N.J./Perth Amboy) got the start in game two and had a comfortable outing, going 4.1 innings and allowing two earned with four strikeouts in the loss. Dabbadie — who tossed 114 pitches in her game one effort — entered the game with one out in the top of the fifth, pitched out of a jam and tossed a scoreless 2.2 innings of relief to go with five more strikeouts on 50 pitches and just one hit. NJCU managed to get runners in scoring position several times throughout the second game, but was unfortunately unable to convert at any point in the loss.
Game 2 Highlights:
- Tunney was 2-for-2 with a couple of stolen bases and a sac but to finish her day 4-for-5 overall.
-
Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) and Barrious were each 1-for-3 in game two.

Weather permitting, the Green and Gold are scheduled to return to action this Saturday, March 25, for a home doubleheader at the Gerrity against Hunter College, beginning at 1:00 p.m. After not having met since 2012, the Gothic Knights swept the Hawks last season (1-0 and 7-6) back on March 26, 2022. Mariah Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) had a couple RBI in the high-scoring game two win.
