MAHWAH, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's tennis teams each extended their winning streaks on Monday, April 10, as both squared off against Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play. The men swept the Roadrunners, 9-0, to make it four consecutive wins, while the women took down Ramapo, 8-1, for their fifth straight victory.
For the NJCU women (8-3, 5-0 NJAC), they started it off against the Roadrunners (5-6, 1-1 NJAC) with an 8-0 sweep at second doubles from sophomores
Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) and
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) before the third doubles pairing of rookies
Sophia Jurina (Munich, Germany/Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium) and
Mar Julia (Barcelona, Spain/INS Sant Quirze) won, 8-1. Seniors
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) and
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) finished up doubles to put the Gothic Knights ahead, 3-0, with their victory, 8-3. Malhotra and
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) then each made quick work at singles play, winning at third and fifth, respectively, via scoreless, 6-0, 6-0, sweeps, making the match official at 5-0.
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani), Clamor and Jurina each lost just one set in singles play, as well, winning 6-1, 6-0, at #1, 6-0, 6-1, at #2 and 6-1, 6-0, at #4, respectively.
On the men's side, the Gothic Knights (8-6, 3-0 NJAC) also swept second doubles, 8-0, behind junior
Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) and sophomore
Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas). That pair was closely followed by the third doubles pair of senior
Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) and freshman
Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria), who won, 8-1. Juniors
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and
Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) battled hard at first doubles and won it 8-6. Leading 3-0 heading into singles play, both Weiss and Julia won at sixth and fifth, respectively, by scores of 6-2, 6-0, to make it officially. Teynie was close behind, winning 6-0, 6-3, at first singles. Ley was victorious at second singles, 6-3, 6-1, while Caro and Pluis each won at third and fourth, respectively, 6-3, 6-2.
