Women's Tennis Falls at Division I Delaware State

DOVER, Del. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team saw its five-match win streak come to an end on Wednesday, April 12, on the road as the Gothic Knights fell to Division I Delaware State University, 6-1. With the match being hosted by a Division I institution, rather than playing a best-of-nine match where each individual doubles match counts as one point, doubles as a whole counts for just one point in a best-of-seven match.

That being said, the Hornets (10-7-1) topped NJCU (8-4) in three tight doubles matches, the closest of which went to a tiebreaker at first singles for seniors Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) and Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) — the duo lost, 7-6, at #1 — while sophomore Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) and freshman Sophia Jurina (Munich, Germany/Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium) dropped second doubles, 7-5.

Jurina played an extremely tight match at fourth singles for the day's most exciting contest, falling in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 10-7. The Gothic Knights did get a nice win from sophomore Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) at fifth singles as she came away with the 6-0, 6-3, victory.

Up Next:
Jersey City returns to action on Friday afternoon, April 14, in Ewing, N.J., for a de fecto New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) regular-season championship match — at least for the Gothic Knights anyway. Should NJCU — who is 5-0 in NJAC play with just one conference match remaining — top The College of New Jersey on Friday, the Gothic Knights would be crowned NJAC Regular-Season Champions. However, the Lions still have four more conference match, including Friday's versus NJCU, remaining and a TCNJ win — coupled with Stockton University's win over Ramapo College earlier today — would not decide the regular-season title.
