Etienne Sets Program Record in Men's 200m, Claims Gold in 400m; Young Finishes as Runner-Up in Women's 100m

LYNCHBURG, Va. — In just his second event of the outdoor season — the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic, hosted by Lynchburg University on Friday and Saturday, April 14-15 — senior Dave Etienne (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) of the New Jersey City University men's track & field team set a program record in the 200-meter dash (21.47), placing fourth, and also took home first-place in the 400-meter dash with an outdoor personal record (48.18), which is fifth all-time. For the NJCU women, senior Lamya Young (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) notched a PR in the 100-meter dash (13.11) and place second overall.

Some other men's highlights, in addition to Etienne's big Saturday, included senior Jason Garcia (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson), who PRed in the 100m to place 10th with a time of 11.30. Rookie Juan Mercedes Cruz (El Seybo, Dominican Republic/Manville) was not far behind as he came in 12th at 11:39. Senior Adnan Kpodo (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) ran the fifth-fastest outdoor 800-meter time in program history and placed fifth, crossing at 2:00.04. Freshman Mahkai Winston (Union, N.J./Union) competed in shot put, discus and hammer over the weekend, highlighted by his PR in the hammer with a toss of 34.38 meters.

Other notable performances for the women, in addition to Young's runner-up finish in the 100m, included fellow senior Tiffany Ortiz (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter). She competed in the 400m and placed 18th overall with a personal record time of 1:02.14. Additionally, sophomore Ashley Adames (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) notched a 13th-place finished in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 1:12.94.
