Women's Tennis Opens NJAC Play with Strong, 5-4 Home Win over Stockton

Gothic Knights Come Back from Down 2-1 in Doubles for Victory

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team picked up a hard-fought home victory on Sunday afternoon, April 2, within the friendly confines of the Lincoln Park Tennis Center, opening up New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play with a comeback, 5-4 win over Stockton University.

NJCU (4-3, 1-0 NJAC) trailed 2-1 after the senior duo of Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) and Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) earned the sole win in doubles play at #1 by a score of 8-4 over Lily Muir and Sarb Devi of the Ospreys (7-2, 0-1 NJAC).

However, the Gothic Knights opened up singles play with four straight victories to clinch the comeback win at 5-4. Zorzan got things started at first singles, dropping just two sets in her 6-0, 6-2 win over Muir. Clamor followed suit at second singles, again dropping just two sets in her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Devi.

Sophomore Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) was next to finish at fifth singles and took her match 6-4, 6-0, to put NJCU up 4-2. Finally, rookie Sophia Jurina (Munich, Germany/Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium) cruised past her foe at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-2, to clinch the match with the Green and Gold's fifth win of the afternoon.
