PITMAN, N.J. — For the second consecutive academic year, the New Jersey City University department of athletics landed a program-record-tying 54 student-athletes on the 2022-23 Academic All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Team. Leading the way this year for the Gothic Knights were the two First Team selections, sophomore
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) of women's tennis and senior
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) of men's tennis. On the Second Team were senior
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) of women's tennis and junior
Topu Saha (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) of men's cross country/track & field.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-NJAC teams, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior who has competed in a conference-sponsored sport while earning a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 over 24 credits at their respective institution. Freshmen and first-year transfers — with the exception of those from other NJAC schools — are not eligible. Each of the conference's 10 member institutions receive two First Team and two Second Team selections, as well.
The baseball squad is back at the top of the list for NJCU, having garnered nine selection, one more than their total of eight from last season. In second, just behind baseball and also with one more honoree than last season was the women's cross country and track & field program, which had eight selections. The men's cross country and track & field and men's soccer programs both tie for the next spot with six honorees apiece, while women's soccer and men's tennis each earned five. The softball, women's tennis and women's volleyball teams each notched four selection, while men's basketball, women's basketball and men's volleyball all collected one honoree each.
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino)
Zorzan, in her first season of Academic All-NJAC eligibility, posted a perfect 4.0 en route to her First Team selection. She adds this honor to her others from this year, having been named Academic All-District and selected as NJCU's Female Presidential Academic Achievement Award Winner. Zorzan was also a First Team All-NJAC doubles selection in 2021-22.
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine)
Teynie, now a two-time Academic All-NJAC First Team selection, was a First Team All-NJAC selection in both singles and doubles this season. An Academic All-District honoree, he was also named the Male Thomas M. Gerrity NJCU Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Male Presidential Academic Achievement Award Winner.
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College)
Also in her first season of Academic All-NJAC eligibility, Clamor adds her Second Team recognition of her First Team All-NJAC recognition in both singles and doubles this season. She was also selected as an Academic All-District honoree and NJCU's 2022-23 NJAIAW Woman of the Year.
Topu Saha (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson)
Saha was a Honorable Mention Academic All-NJAC honoree in his first season of eligibility last year before earning Second Team honors this year. One of NJCU's primary cross country runners, he finished top three for the Gothic Knights in all six events he competed in. Additionally, he PRed in the indoor 5k and outdoor 800m and 1,500m events this year.
