JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team took on non-conference foe Brooklyn College today, Monday, Sept. 25, in wet and rainy conditions on the turf at Caven Point Field. The Gothic Knights dominated the Bulldogs in every facet of the match and, though they only scored once in the first half, ended up defeating BC by a final of 11-1 thanks to an offensive barrage throughout the day.
NJCU (3-4-1) took a total of 22 shots in the first half, including 11 on net, but went up just 1-0 to start off the scoring as, during a scrum in front following a corner, NJCU drew a foul inside the box. Junior midfielder
Jen Quizhpi (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) proceeded to convert on the penalty for the first goal of her collegiate career in the 29th. The Brooklyn (1-5-2) keeper managed to keep the Gothic Knights off the board for the remainder of the half.
The Green and Gold did not have to wait long after the start of the second, however, as sophomore keeper
Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) launched a massive downfield. Her classmate, midfielder
Becky Lopez (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) headed the ball ahead for senior forward
Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret), who beat the defender in a foot race and lifted the ball over the Bulldog keeper's head for the tally to start the 47th and make it 2-0. The third goal of the day came as freshman
Bella Moore (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) dropped a pass off to sophomore back Jessica Digristina on the far side. The latter sent it forward again to Moore, who struck a cross to the nearside and found Lopez, who ripped one to the top right for the goal in the 56th.
Luck struck for the fourth goal in the 59th as senior back
Michelle Taras (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) sent a corner from the nearside right on net. It was punched out by the keeper, but then went back in via an own goal off the leg of a Bulldog. Sophomore midfielder
Gabriela Rodriguez (Elizabeth, N.J./Frank J. Cicarell Academy) then made it 5-0 in the 69th. Sophomore back
Natalia Jaramillo (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) sent a cross to center, where Brites fired off a shot that was turned aside. The rebound ended up on Rodriguez' foot and she immediately put it away. Brooklyn made it a 5-1 game midway through the 70th, but a standout play by sophomore forward
Ari Flores-Ortiz (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) brought it back to a five-goal game. She forced a turnover right in front of the Bulldogs' net, passed it over to freshman midfielder
Beatriz Oliveira (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side), who immediately sent it back. Flores-Ortiz took a shot that ricocheted off a defender and in.
Then, in the 72nd, senior midfielder
Samantha Szymanski (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) placed a free kick to the front of the box and Rodriguez once again got a hold of it and beat the keeper for her second of the day and third of the season. In the 76th, Flores-Ortiz struck again off a nice pass from senior midfielder
Rayanna Lima (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) that split the defenders. Senior midfielder
Gianna Giordano (Bayonne, N.J./Hudson Catholic) then scored the first goal of her collegiate career off a few nice passes in the 79th. Syzmanski started off again, finding Oliveira to passed to Giordano for the goal. Quizphi notched another point in the 84th as she found sophomore forward
Yoselis De Jesus Minyety (San Cristobal, Dominican Republic/Loyola Polytechnic Institute) for the latter's first goal of the year. She would strike again to close out the scoring at 11-1 in the 88th as Oliveira notched her third assist of the day with a nice pass through the backline to spring her teammate for the one-on-one with the keeper.
