JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The NJCU women's volleyball team faced a tough matchup against Ramapo, falling in three sets on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
Ramapo (2-7, 1-1 NJAC) dominated the game, outpacing the Gothic Knights (8-8, 1-1 NJAC) in key statistics: 38-25 in kills, 9-5 in aces, 5-3 in blocks, 34-24 in assists, and 50-32 in digs. Senior outside hitter
Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) led NJCU with 8 kills, 2 aces, and 9 digs, while freshman setter
Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) contributed a team-high 21 assists.
The first set saw Ramapo take an early 9-4 lead. However, NJCU capitalized on six errors by the Roadrunners to gain a brief advantage at 10-9. The teams traded points until Ramapo closed it out, taking the set 25-23.
In the second set, Ramapo maintained control throughout, with the Gothic Knights struggling to get within four points. The Roadrunners secured a 2-0 set lead with a 25-18 victory.
The third set proved to be the closest, with both teams staying within three points of each other. NJCU edged ahead 24-23 after a kill from sophomore middle blocker
Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) and an ace by sophomore
Elisabeth Brito (Jersey City, N.J./Union City). Although Melanson tied the set at 25 with a kill assisted by Overstreet, Ramapo ultimately clinched the match with two successful attacks.
