LANGHORNE, PA – The New Jersey City University women's volleyball squad dropped a non-conference match to Cairn University on Thursday, October 17, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-11).
NJCU (10-11) was held to .081 hitting in the match and tallied 32 kills as a team. Cairn (13-3) hit .258 as a team, recording 44 kills led by Georgianna Thorpe (12). Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) led the Gothic Knights with 12 kills while Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) added 10 on 21 total attacks. Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) paced the team with 18 digs alongside Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) who led the team with 24 assists.
The Gothic Knights held an 11-7 lead early in the set via a 5-1 run with kills from Melanson and Marina Millet. Cairn responded with a 9-2 run to propel themselves into the lead, 16-13. Once in the lead, Cairn held the Gothic Knights back to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Gothic Knights again got off to a nice lead, 8-2, however, Cairn responded with a run of their own to jump in front 12-9. Kills by Gonzalez and Kiki Lugo (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) sparked a 4-0 run by the Gothic Knights to put them in the lead briefly. With the set tied at 21, Carin took control and closed out the set to go up 2-0.
The third set did not go as planned for the Gothic Knights as Cairn used an 11-1 to start the set to cruise to the third set win.
