JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Gothic Knights women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss on senior day to Rutgers-Camden at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field on Saturday, October 19.
NJCU (5-3-6, 1-3-2) fired 11 shots and put six on frame while Rutgers-Camden (7-7-2, 2-4) finished the game with 16 shots with six finding the mark. Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) led the Gothic Knights with three shots while Mannino finished with three saves.
The Gothic Knights and Scarlet Raptors played an evenly matched first half as Rutgers-Camden edged out New Jersey City University 8-5 in shots. The Gothic Knights put three shots on frame in the opening stanza, however, Michaela Graham was up to the task and parried all three away. With time dwindling and the game looking like it would head into the half knotted at zero, the Scarlet Raptors found the back of the net. Brianne Reeves collected the goal kick at midfield with 20 seconds left and launched a high arching shot that bounced in after Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) slipped trying to make the save. That goal sent the Scarlet Raptors into the half with a 1-0 lead in a crucial NJAC matchup.
15 minutes into the second half, the Gothic Knights nearly opened its scoring ledger when Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) hit the crossbar off of a free kick from the left corner. Katie Kelly (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) continued to pressure Rutgers-Camden's defense and forced a save by Graham that fell in the box but was cleared away by the defense. The Scarlet Raptors found their second goal of the game with 18 minutes to go off of a corner kick. Reeves sent in a cross to the near post where it was parried off of the woodwork onto the foot of Jazmin Brown where she poked it into the back of the net to put Rutgers-Camden ahead 2-0. Shortly after that goal, Reeves netted her second of the game when Asia Horne hit a low cross to her foot where she beat Mannino. With nine minutes to go, Samantha Szymanski (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) found the Gothic Knights' first goal of the game off of a cross from Alvarenga, beating Graham from inside the box. With two minutes remaining, the Gothic Knights had a golden opportunity to cut the lead down to one with a loose ball in the box, but it was poked away from harm and out of play. NJCU kept the pressure up but Rutgers-Camden absorbed wave after wave to hold onto the win.
