Women’s Volleyball Falls to William Paterson

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team faced a tough loss in their NJAC matchup against William Paterson, falling 3-0 with set scores of 25-11, 25-11, and 25-18.

The Pioneers (14-9, 5-1 NJAC), first in the conference, showcased a strong performance, finishing with a .234 hitting percentage compared to NJCU's (10-13, 2-4 NJAC) .070. The Gothic Knights struggled in key statistics, being outpaced in kills (36-20), aces (15-5), blocks (5-3), assists (32-16), and digs (56-50).

Senior outside hitter Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) stood out with nine kills, 12 digs, and a pair of aces. Freshman setter Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) contributed a double-double with 14 assists and 11 digs, her seventh of the season. Juniors Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) and Marina Millet combined for four blocks, while sophomore libero Elisabeth Brito (Jersey City, N.J./Union City) recorded a season-high 11 digs.

In the first set, NJCU briefly led 6-5 before a 17-5 run by the Pioneers secured the set 25-11, with Gonzalez leading the team with three kills. The second set saw William Paterson start strong with a 9-1 run. Despite attempts by NJCU to close the gap, including contributions from junior right-side Kiki Lugo (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) with four points, the Pioneers took the set 25-11.

The third set began with NJCU taking a 3-2 lead, but a 7-2 run from William Paterson shifted momentum. NJCU rallied back with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 14-13, but the Pioneers responded decisively with a 5-0 run, ultimately winning the set 25-18.
