Women's Volleyball Falls to Kean in Three Sets

The Gothic Knights Look to Bounce Back on Senior Night

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team faced a challenging matchup against Kean, falling in three sets: 25-13, 25-19, 25-21, during their NJAC contest on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

Kean (16-11, 5-2 NJAC) dominated the match with a .243 hitting percentage compared to NJCU's (10-14, 2-5 NJAC) .071. The Cougars outperformed the Gothic Knights in multiple statistical categories, including kills (41-25), assists (33-24), service aces (7-3), total blocks (6-5), and digs (46-43).

Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) was a key player for NJCU, leading the team with 14.5 points and 13 kills, achieving a .257 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) also stood out, recording 22 assists and 11 digs, marking her eighth double-double of the season. Additionally, freshman middle blocker Jaelyn Martinez (Lakewood, Fla./Lake Gibson) made her presence felt defensively, leading both teams with 3.5 total blocks.

The match began with a promising start for NJCU as they led 4-3 in the first set. However, a series of errors allowed Kean to tie the score, after which they launched a 21-9 run, securing the first set at 25-13. Gonzalez and Millet combined for five kills.

In the second set, NJCU kept the score close initially, trailing by only three points at 17-14. However, a service error from the Gothic Knights allowed Kean to extend their lead to 20-16, ultimately sealing the set 25-19. During this set, Gonzalez and sophomore middle blocker Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) were the only NJCU players to record kills, combining for nine.

The third set proved to be a pivotal moment for NJCU. After falling behind 14-7, the team rallied with an impressive 8-0 run, thanks in part to two crucial kills from Gonzalez, putting them ahead 15-14. The set remained tight, with both teams trading points. At 20-20, Kean seized momentum again, finishing the match with a 5-1 run to take the set and the match.
