SCRANTON, PA - The New Jersey City University women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Scranton, 76-40.
NJCU (1-2) shot 22.4% from the floor and was led offensively by Destiny Battle's (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) 11 points. Kendra Rigo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) added 10 points and tied Battle for the team lead in rebounds with four. Scranton (2-0) shot an efficient 47.3% from the field with Meghan Lamanna scoring a team-high 17 points. Kyra Quigley registered a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.
The Gothic Knights' offense got off to a slow start, netting six points in the first quarter while Scranton's offense had their highest output of the game in the same stanza. NJCU's offense improved in the second, scoring 10 points to cut into Scranton's lead. Battle converted a fast break layup to bring the Gothic Knights within 17, however, Scranton's offense proved to be too strong as they pushed their lead out to 26 by quarter's end.
The offensive struggles continued for the Gothic Knights in the second half as they were unable to close the gap against Scranton. NJCU was held to its lowest output of the season in the loss and will look ahead to Tuesday, November 26 when they open New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play against Ramapo at 5:30 pm.
