GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Gothic Knights women's volleyball team closed out its regular season on Tuesday evening, falling to Rowan 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-11). Despite the loss, the women's volleyball squad secured a spot in the NJAC Tournament for the first time since 2008.
NJCU (11-16, 2-6) tallied 19 kills as a team with a set-high of seven in the opening set. Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) paced NJCU with eight kills while Marina Millett (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) and Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) collected 11 digs each. Rowan (15-12, 5-3) hit .165 and recorded 32 kills in the win.
Rowan jumped out to a quick lead in the opening set, 7-2, until the Gothic Knights cut into the lead and trailed by two. The Profs used another surge to extend their lead to 12-5. NJCU wasn't able to mount a comeback as they fell behind in the match, 1-0.
In the second set, the Gothic Knights took advantage of three Rowan errors to take a 3-0 lead. That lead, however, wouldn't last long as the Profs responded with a 10-1 run to take the lead. NJCU cut the lead down to three, 12-9, behind a block from Gonzalez. Rowan then went on a 6-0 run which extended their lead to 18-9. NJCU wouldn't back down as they scored six straight points to come within three of Rowan. When that run ended, Rowan took control and closed out the set.
The third set saw Rowan take a 10-2 lead early on, a lead they would hold onto throughout the set.
