EWING, N.J. – The New Jersey City University's women's soccer team fell to 10th-ranked The College of New Jersey on Wednesday night, 2-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Semifinal.
NJCU (6-5-8) struggled to get the offense moving against the NJAC's top seed, TCNJ (16-0-2), as they mustered just three shots, with one forcing a save. The Lions, on the other hand, tallied 27 shots in the game putting 12 on frame. Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township), a Second Team All-NJAC recipient, made 10 saves in the game.
The Lions' offense found success early on, hitting two shots at goal, both of which needed intervention by the NJCU defense to prevent a goal. TCNJ opened the scoring ledger in the 16th minute via Cassidy DiSabato. DiSabato received a pass from Alyssa Alfano and Allie O'Keefe. NJCU tallied their lone shot on goal in the 22nd from Gineth Arias Martinez (Soacha Cundinamarca, Colombia/Institución Educativa Leon XII). TCNJ continued to pepper Mannino and finally broke through for a second time in the 44th minute behind a solo goal from Victoria D'Imperio.
In the second half, the Gothic Knights absorbed wave after wave of attack by the Lions but held firm as the Lions could not break through for a third time. Offensively, the Gothic Knights sent two shots towards net but neither hit the mark as they flew away from harm.
