Men's Basketball Stumbles Against Kean, 79-73

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The NJCU men's basketball dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game to Kean, 79-73, on Saturday, December 12 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.

NJCU (6-4, 3-2) shot a robust 89.5% from the charity stripe and 44.1% from the floor. Bakhi Rogers-Robinson (Orange, N.J./West Caldwell Tech) paced the team with 16 points on 60% shooting while Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds. Kean (4-6, 3-2) shot an efficient 42.1% from three-point range led by Andrew Turco who converted at a 50% clip. Justin Morton led the team with 23 points off of the bench.

Brenden Kelly (Clark, N.J./Elizabeth) was red hot to start the game, scoring eight of NJCU's 10 points during a 10-2 run. Kean adjusted to the game and quickly erased its deficit despite four quick points by Bakhi Rogers-Robinson (Orange, N.J./West Caldwell Tech) at the midpoint. The tides turned in favor of the Cougars with 6:21 left in the first as Justin Morton converted a jumper to put Kean ahead 21-20. Both teams matched each other offensively, keeping the game close during a three-minute stretch. Kean began to pull away with 2:52 remaining, using a 10-5 run to take a seven-point lead into the locker room.

The Gothic Knights were quick to put a dent in Kean's lead to start the second half with Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International) and Lewis scoring back-to-back to cut the lead down to three. The Cougars responded and pushed its lead out to 10 with 14:23 remaining on the clock. NJCU remained in striking distance and with 7:13 to go, they trailed by two after Hakeen Wilson cashed in from range. Gilbert went on to hit both of his free throw attempts to tie the game at 61. Kean, however, went on an 8-0 run to create separation between the teams, a gap they carried to the end of the game.
