Men's Basketball Holds Off Hood, 81-79, in Thrilling Doc Greene Tournament Opener

HUNTINGDON, PA. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's basketball team pulled off a thrilling 81-79 victory over Hood College on the opening day of the Doc Greene Tournament, hosted by Juniata College on Sunday, December 29.

Five Gothic Knights reached double digits in scoring, led by senior Isaiah Johnson-Williams (Jersey City, N.J./Don Bosco), who finished with a team-high 15 points, including three three-pointers. Junior Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) delivered a standout performance, posting his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, alongside a season-high four assists. Senior Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy) also contributed 12 points off the bench, while fifth-year senior Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International) added 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Junior Arterio Williams (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) rounded out the double-digit scorers with a season-best 10 points on 83.3% shooting (5-of-6) and four rebounds.

The Gothic Knights (7-4) shot 47.6% from the field, 40.0% from three-point range, and 62.5% from the free-throw line. They outpaced Hood in several key categories, including points in the paint (36-26), points off turnovers (16-13), second-chance points (19-15), and bench points (44-22). Hood, however, won the fast-break points battle, 14-13.

Hood College (6-5) was led by Kullen Robinson, who put up a game-high 26 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Jude Huseby added 12 points and five rebounds for the Horses.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Hood taking a 38-33 lead into the break. The Horses extended their advantage early in the second half, grabbing their first double-digit lead of the game at 51-41 with 14:03 left. However, NJCU responded with a 9-2 run, fueled by a basket from Williams, cutting the deficit to 53-50.

The two teams traded baskets in the closing minutes, but it was a clutch three-pointer by Johnson-Williams at the 1:36 mark that gave NJCU their first lead of the second half, 76-75. After both teams exchanged points, Lewis made a pair of critical free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give the Gothic Knights a two-possession cushion. Hood's final-second layup was not enough, as NJCU held on for the 81-79 win.
