Slow Start Dooms Women's Basketball Against Kean, 57-47

JERSEY CITY, NJ - NJCU's women's basketball squad had its two-game win streak against the Cougars snapped, 57-47, on Saturday, December 14 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.

NJCU (3-6, 2-3) was led by Kendra Rigo's (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) 14 points and 60% shooting from the field while Olivia Wooten (East Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) paced the team with seven rebounds. Kelley and Pichardo added 9 and seven points, respectively. Kean (4-5, 2-3) picked up a 17-point, 15-rebound double-double from Maddison Vaughn and 13 points each from Maya Edwards and Brittany Graff.

The Gothic Knights had a blazing start to the game, tallying points in bunches. Elainy Pichardo (Union City, N.J./Union City) sent Brittany Graff to the floor with a fake spin layup to cap the 7-2 opening run by the Gothic Knights. Kean clawed its way back into the game, using a 16-4 run to take the lead, 18-11. Destiny Battle (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) ended the scoring drought for the Gothic Knights in the final moments of the first quarter with a baseline jumper to send NJCU into the second quarter down 18-13.

Kean's offense continued firing in the second quarter as they extended their lead behind 42% shooting from the field and 50% shooting from behind the arc. The Cougars extended their lead to 39-22 at the break, thanks to 21 points in the second quarter, highlighted by five points from Maya Edwards. The Gothic Knights' 9 points were spread across three players Na'Tori Postell, Tahirah Kelley (Linden, N.J./Immaculate Conception), and Ma'Ziyah Richards (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield)

NJCU's offense came together from halftime and outscored the Cougars 14-11. The Gothic Knights chipped away at the lead backed by a 7-2 run at the end of the quarter to bring NJCU within 14 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Gothic Knights stayed the course and kept momentum on their side in the final stanza. Kean's offense struggled to find points early in the fourth which allowed NJCU to come within seven. Kean, however, held off the surging Gothic Knights to secure the NJAC win.
