Women's Basketball Falls to DeSales, 72-51

CENTER VALLEY, PA - The New Jersey City University women's basketball squad dropped their 4th straight game on Saturday, December 28 against DeSales, 72-51.

NJCU (3-7) was led by Destiny Battle's (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) 15 points, with 9 of them coming from the free-throw line. As a team, the Gothic Knights struggled from the field, shooting just 22.4%. Kendra Rigo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) paced the team in minutes and rebounds with 32 and seven, respectively. DeSales (7-3) shot 39.7% from the field with Mikaili Donmoyer scoring 21 points in the win. Morgan Sterner added an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double.

DeSales jumped out to a strong lead, scoring eight unanswered points, a run that would set the tone for the remainder of the game. Rigo notched the first points on the board for the Gothic Knights, cashing in from behind the arc. DeSales expanded its lead to 10 before NJCU found the bottom of the net again, this time from Na'Tori Postell. The Gothic Knights continued to show its range as Battle converted from deep, marking the 3rd three-point basket by the Gothic Knights in the first quarter. Tahirah Kelley (Linden, N.J./Immaculate Conception) brought the Gothic Knights within three headed into the second stanza with back-to-back three-point buckets.

NJCU's offense stalled in the second quarter, tallying just eight points while DeSales continued its stride with 15 points. When the game switched to the second half, the Gothic Knights returned to their form from the end of the first quarter, tallying 16 points, their highest mark of the game. After trailing by as much as 19, the Gothic Knights cut it down to 9 thanks to a pair of free throws by Elyssa Russo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck). That, however, would be the closest the Gothic Knights got to taking the lead for the remainder of the game as DeSales closed out the game with a 21-point 4th quarter.
