#6 Bowdoin Too Much for NJCU Women's Basketball, 79-59

JERSEY CITY, NJ - In the first meeting between the Gothic Knights women's basketball team and #6 Bowdoin, it was the Polar Bears who came out on top, 79-59, on Saturday, January 4 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.

NJCU (3-8) was led by Elyssa Russo's (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) 17 points, the second-highest tally of her career, in the loss. As a team, the Gothic Knights shot 33.3% from the floor and 35.3% from three. Na'Tori Postell added 9 points and led the team with six rebounds while Kendra Rigo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) was quick with her hands and tallied five steals. #6 Bowdoin (11-0) had five players score in double-digits led by Abbie Quinn's 13. Sydney Jones recorded a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double along with six assists.

Bowdoin came out red-hot to start the game, shooting 70% from the floor and taking a 10-0 lead, forcing the Gothic Knights to burn an early timeout. Out of the timeout, Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) recorded the first points of the game for the Gothic Knights after she cashed in with a jumper. NJCU continued to chip away at the lead until they trailed by six after an Olivia Wooten (East Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) free throw. NJCU's offense would go stagnant for the remaining three minutes of the first quarter as Bowdoin pushed its lead out to 10, 21-11.

In the second quarter, the Gothic Knights and Polar Bears went back and forth for most of the quarter, emphasizing that 10-0 run to start the game by Bowdoin. Tahirah Kelley (Linden, N.J./Immaculate Conception) kept NJCU within striking distance, tallying a team-high five points in the second stanza. Carly Davey helped fend off NJCU's surge, scoring all seven points on a 7-3 run to end the half.

The third quarter proved disastrous for the Gothic Knights as they were outscored 23-9. Bowdoin replicated their first-quarter energy, unleashing a 16-0 run that ballooned their lead to a daunting 28 points. Wooten broke the run with a pair from the charity stripe before Na'Tyah Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Center) added another two points via a layup. Elyssa Russo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) continued to build on the momentum NJCU was gathering and converted from range with 28 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Russo caught fire in the fourth quarter which helped the Gothic Knights chip away at the lead. NJCU trailed by as much as 35 before Russo found her stroke from behind the arc allowing the Gothic Knights to eventually come within 20 of the Polar Bears. The run, however, would come up short as the clock would hit zero preserving Bowdoin's unblemished record.
