Rigo Leads NJCU Past Rutgers-Newark, 53-40, in NJAC Clash

NEWARK, NJ - The Gothic Knights' women's basketball team knocked off the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark, 53-40, in a game that saw 61 turnovers.

NJCU (3-3, 2-0) kept their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) record unblemished at the Golden Dome on Wednesday night behind Kendra Rigo's (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) team-high 13 points. The Gothic Knights were efficient from the charity stripe, converting at a 72% clip. Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) limited Rutgers-Newark's (3-5, 0-2) second-chance opportunities as she pulled down 12 rebounds. Aiding Rigo in the scoring was Destiny Battle (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) and Tahirah Kelley (Linden, N.J./Immaculate Conception), who scored 11 and 10, respectively. For the Scarlet Raiders, Sanaa Brodie paced the team with 10 points and six rebounds.

The battle between the two NJAC rivals saw the Gothic Knights fall behind early, 6-2. Rigo leveled the game with a layup before converting again from the paint to put NJCU in the driver's seat. Olivia Wooten (East Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) gave the Gothic Knights their first double-digit lead of the game with 3:02 left in the second quarter. A brief surge by the Scarlet Raiders brought them back down to single digits, however, the Gothic Knights regained control and, behind Dynasty Chandler's (Elizabeth, N.J./J. Christian Bollwage Finance Academy) free throws, pushed their lead out to 11 before the break.

Out of the locker room, the teams played to an even draw, 12-12, in the 3rd quarter. The Scarlet Raiders looked to be gaining control as they cut the lead down to six with 3:40 remaining, but that's where their scoring would end. The Gothic Knights took advantage of the cold spell and extended their lead back to 11. In the 4th, the Gothic Knights remained stout on defense and prevented the Scarlet Raiders from mounting a comeback effort.

From Head Coach Pat Devaney
"Tonight was a good win against a surging Rutgers-Newark team. Defense was a big part of our win tonight as well as some key contributions from everyone. Tonight was a total team effort win."
