Women's Basketball Drops First NJAC Contest of the Season to Rowan, 63-52

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The New Jersey City University women's basketball team suffered its first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss of the season, 63-52, to Rowan University.

NJCU (3-4, 2-1) was led offensively by Destiny Battle's (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) 17 points. Battle also stuffed the stat sheet with six assists, seven rebounds, and five steals. Elyssa Russo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) finished with 15 points, her second-highest tally of the season, while Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added 10 points. Rowan (5-2, 3-0) kept its conference record perfect behind 16 points from Kristina Johnson. Charlotte Carlies led the Profs with 12 rebounds alongside her seven points.

Rowan commanded the opening stanza of the game, using a 66.7% three-point percentage to build a comfortable 15-9 lead. The Gothic Knights eventually settled into the game and played level with the Profs over the final 4:13 of the quarter.

The pendulum began to swing in favor of the Gothic Knights in the second quarter as their stout defense forced Rowan into low-percentage shots, allowing them to close the gap. NJCU used a 7-2 run, with points from Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and Destiny Battle (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy), to bring the Gothic Knights within six. Both teams would hit a cold spell that lasted two minutes until Kristina Johnson cashed in from range to put the Profs up by 9. A nifty play by the Gothic Knights brought them within six as they entered the locker room.

Momentum did not remain with the Gothic Knights to start the third, as Rowan widened its lead with a 19-0 run that spanned 6:30. John wiggled her way into the paint and tallied the first basket for NJCU of the quarter which ignited an 8-0 run to send the Gothic Knights into the final quarter down 17.

In the fourth, Na'Tori Postell kept the Gothic Knights in the game with a three-point basket from Battle. Elyssa Russo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) followed suit and quickly brought NJCU within 10 with 3:41 remaining on the clock. Rowan kept NJCU from getting any closer as they converted from the charity stripe down the stretch to hold onto the win.
