Records Fall Again as Track & Field Compete at Morgan State Legacy

BALTIMORE — The New Jersey City University men's and women's track & field programs competed at the Morgan State University Legacy Meet over the weekend, and once again a pair of records were taken down. Rookie sensation Jezena Aponte (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder) broke her own mark in the 1,500-meter race by over two seconds, while sophomore Sirell Clark (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter) toppled his own record in the hammer throw by over one meter, as well.

Aponte, as mentioned, set a new program record in the 1,500m, placing fourth overall out of 23 runners with a time of 4:53.20. She also ran the second-fastest outdoor 800-meter time in program history with a mark of 2:25.36 — just 0:00.06 behind her own program record set last week. Additionally, junior Reyanna Henderson (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Two) ran a personal-record time of 59.20 in the 400-meter dash, marking the first time since the program restarted in 2018-19 that a women's sprinter has turned in a 400m time below 1:00.00. She also posted times of 12.52 in the 100-meter dash and 25.74 in the 200-meter dash.

Training for the heptathlon for the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) outdoor championships, junior Ashley Adames (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) PRed in both the 100-meter hurdles (17.42) and javelin throw (26.03 meters), while also posting distances of 4.25 meters in the long jump and 6.56 meters in the shot put. Sophomore Shyanne Anson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) also PRed in the javelin (30.04m) and the hammer throw (28.14m), while freshman Lucy Pelaez (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder) PRed in hammer, as well (25.04m) — she added a toss of 7.45m in the shot put.

On the men's side of things, Clark once again toppled his own program record in the hammer throw, this time by over a meter with a distance of 41.94m. Graduate student Jaime Tlatelpa (Jersey City, N.J./University Academy Charter) owns five of the program's top-10 times in the 1,500m, notching the fifth-fastest time in history at 4:18.21. Senior Jason Garcia (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) was speedy in the 100m (11.17) and 200m (23.01), as well.

The Gothic Knights will send a contingent of runners to the 128th running of the historic Penn Relays, hosted at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. NJCU will compete on Friday and Saturday, April 26-27.
