Softball Travels Down to #13 Rowan for a Pair

GLASSBORO, N.J. — The New Jersey City University softball team played a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) on the road on Saturday, April 6, against #13-ranked Rowan University. NJCU held the Profs in check for most of game one, but fell 8-1, before Rowan won game two, 12-1, in five innings.

NJCU (6-9, 1-3 NJAC) started off game one by taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against the Profs (19-5, 4-0 NJAC). Senior shortstop Emily Tunney (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) led off with a walk and then advanced to second with one out on a passed ball. Then, as senior catcher Mariah Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) walked later on, Tunney stole third when Rowan's guard was down. Tunney then scored on a RBI groundout to make it 1-0.

Senior Sidnie Dbbadie allowed four over the first two innings, but managed to keep the Profs off the board until the bottom of the fourth. Rowan did score four in the bottom of the sixth to get to the final of 8-1. Rookie Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) pitched to three outs in the sixth, as well.

The second game saw Rowan scored all 12 of its runs over the first four innings. The Gothic Knights did scratch one across in the top of the fifth. Senior Skylah Cartwright (Willingboro, N.J./Burlington County Tech) reached first with a one-out walk and then advanced to second on a groundout. Rookie outfielder Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) plated Cartwright with a two-out RBI single to left.

Senior Sam Miller (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) was tagged with the loss, while Tunney and Martin each tossed one inning.
