Men's Soccer Draws with Hunter

Jersey City, N.J. - The New Jersey City University men's soccer team faced Hunter on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field, resulting in a scoreless draw.

NJCU (6-1-3) outshot Hunter (1-5-1) 16-6, with five shots on target compared to Hunter's two. The Gothic Knights dominated corners 5-1 and the match saw a combined total of 24 fouls.

In the first half, NJCU recorded six shots, including one on target by freshman forward Christan Palmer (Union, N.J./Union), while holding Hunter to just one shot, which was missed high in the 37th minute. Palmer and fifth-year midfielder Thiago Duarte (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) accounted for four of NJCU's shots in that half.

The Gothic Knights started strong in the second half, with junior midfielder Kevin Alves (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) taking a shot on goal within the first three minutes, but it didn't find the net. Hunter had its first on-target shot in the 60th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Dominic Cunha (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) was quick to react and made the save.

In a late surge, NJCU posted three shots on target between the 72nd and 81st minutes, but the Hawks' goalkeeper kept them at bay. The game concluded with a tense moment as Hunter attempted a bicycle kick, that went past Cunha, but fifth-year defender Anthony Salmeron (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) cleared the danger in the final minutes. In a last chance effort, freshman back Hans Zoller's (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Kearny) 89th-minute strike was blocked.

This match marked the fourth meeting between the teams, with Hunter securing its first draw against NJCU.

Highlights:
-Palmer led NJCU with two shots on goal.
-Cunha recorded a save over 90 minutes.
-Freshmen Denilson Salinas (Callao, Peru/Kearny), Zoller, and Salmeron played the full match.
