JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The NJCU women's volleyball team earned a solid 3-1 victory over Penn State Berks on Thursday, September 27, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
NJCU (6-7, 1-0 NJAC) showcased their dominance, leading 49-28 in kills, 47-36 in assists, and 66-53 in digs. Senior outside hitter
Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) was a standout, finishing with 16 kills, 13 digs, and two aces and blocks. Freshman setter
Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) had a stellar performance with 38 assists, while sophomore libero
Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) led defensively with 18 digs.
The match started with Penn State Berks (2-6) taking the first set 25-21, despite NJCU's attempts to close the gap. The Gothic Knights responded fiercely in the second set, overcoming a late deficit to win 26-24, thanks in part to four consecutive points after facing a set point.
NJCU continued to build momentum, winning the third set decisively, 25-18, fueled by a 14-4 run featuring multiple kills from junior outside hitter Marina Millet and sophomore middle blocker
Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick). The Nittany Lions never came within seven points.
In the fourth set, NJCU maintained their intensity, eventually securing the match with a 25-22 victory. Melanson, Millet, and Gonzalez combined for 14 kills in the final set.
