William Paterson Defeats Women’s Basketball 60-49 in NJAC Matchup

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's basketball team lost to William Paterson University (WPU) 60-49 on Jan. 11 at the John J. Moore Athletics Center.

Despite strong individual performances from NJCU's top scorers, including Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) (12 points, 44.4% shooting), Destiny Battle (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) (11 points, 50% shooting, 8 assists, and 5 steals), and Na'tori Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Charter) (10 points), the Gothic Knights (3-10, 2-5 NJAC) struggled with shooting accuracy, finishing at 31.7% from the field, 25% from three-point range, and 50% from the free-throw line.

WPU (10-4, 6-1 NJAC), while also shooting poorly at 32.4% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc, excelled in several key areas. They dominated the boards, out-rebounding NJCU 56-34, including a game-high 15 rebounds from Patty Walsh. Additionally, WPU outscored NJCU in points in the paint (30-16) and second-chance points (21-0). They also shot 66.7% from the free-throw line.

Despite creating 30 turnovers for WPU, NJCU was unable to capitalize on those opportunities as effectively as WPU, who capitalized with 22 points off turnovers compared to NJCU's 15. On the other hand, NJCU led in steals (18-15) and blocks (3-1), but their shooting struggles hindered their ability to capitalize on these advantages.

The teams traded baskets in the first half, with NJCU holding a slight lead heading into the second quarter. However, WPU's strong second quarter, including a three-pointer by Victoria Palladino, gave them a 26-22 halftime lead. WPU further extended their lead with a key 11-2 run late in the third quarter, leading to a double-digit advantage. Despite efforts in the fourth quarter, the Gothic Knights couldn't close the gap, eventually losing by 11 points.
