Men's Volleyball Wins First Match of the Season With 3-0 Sweep of Drew

JERSEY CITY, NJ  - The New Jersey City University men's volleyball team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday, January 21 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center, 3-0 (25-17, 32-30, 25-21), over Drew University.

NJCU (1-3) was led by Marcus Pardasie's (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) 12 kills offensively while Alex Casais (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) paced the team with 30 assists. As a team, the Gothic Knights hit .311 with six service aces. Defensively, Matt Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) tallied 9 digs alongside Nate Aguilar's (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) three block assists. Drew (0-4) was held to .188 hitting as a team as they recorded 15 errors. Barend Oostdam led the team with seven kills and Quinn Donahue directed play with 26 assists.

The Gothic Knights started the match confidently with two kills one from Amaru and one from Peralta. A pair of errors by Drew further extended NJCU's lead until a service error ended the run. The Gothic Knights benefited from three straight errors by the Rangers to stretch their lead to 12-6 before a kill by DuHaime put a marker in Drew's column. Pardasie pushed NJCU's lead to six, 21-15, before three kills gave the Gothic Knights a 1-0 lead in the match.

NJCU faced its toughest challenge of the night in the second set, as it featured 24 ties and 13 lead changes. Once again, NJCU led early on, 7-5, however, that lead would disappear after Drew used a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Errors continued to plague the Rangers as NJCU would knot the set up at 11 before hopping in front, 14-13, thanks to a kill by Victor De Souza (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side). Drew eventually held set point, 27-26, however, a service error put the ball back in NJCU's court where they would take a one-point lead but give it right back to the Rangers. Once again, Drew was on the brink of leveling the match at one before a pair of kills by the Gothic Knights pushed them over the edge, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.

The final set saw NJCU maintain their composure and capitalize on Drew's mounting errors. Early in the set, Mike McGehee (Avondale, Ariz./Agua Fria) provided a spark with a service ace, energizing the Gothic Knights as they pulled ahead. Peralta and Victor De Souza (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) added timely kills to keep NJCU's momentum alive, while the defense, led by Erick Bacuilima's (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) digs, kept Drew at bay. NJCU closed the set 25-21, after a Nathaniel Fisbeck service error.

FROM HEAD COACH CARLO EDRA
"That was a match we had circled on our calendar. Drew beat us last year because they out hustled and outplayed us. Tonight was a big win for us."
