Slow Second Quarter Dooms Women's Basketball vs Montclair, 69-59

MONTCLAIR, NJ - The New Jersey City University women's basketball suffered its sixth straight loss via a 69-59 scoreline to Montclair State University on Wednesday, January 8.

NJCU (3-9, 2-4) was led by Destiny Battle's (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) 13 points, eight steals, and eight rebounds. Elyssa Russo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) added her second straight game with double-digit points, finishing with 10, the second-highest marker on the team. Montclair (10-3, 4-2) picked up a game-high 18 points from Alyssa Craigwell while Olivia Vero and Alexis Strollo added eight rebounds each.

NJCU opened the game trailing 6-0 but bounced back and flipped the script in their favor. Tahirah Kelly put the Gothic Knights ahead by one with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter with a tip-in layup before Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) extended the lead with a three-point bucket. With 2:06 remaining the Red Hawks knotted the game at 16 behind a Vero layup. Olivia Wooten (East Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and Na'Tori Postell capped a 6-0 run to end the quarter with the Gothic Knights ahead 22-16.

The second quarter didn't mirror the first for NJCU as their offense stalled to the tune of just four points, allowing the Red Hawks to take the lead. Despite the lack of offensive production by the Gothic Knights, they went into the half trailing by 9.

Montclair pushed its lead out to as much as 14, however, NJCU stormed back and cut the lead down to six with 1:22 left in the third. Russo would keep the Gothic Knights in striking distance with a long-range basket before Montclair cashed in a pair from the charity stripe before the buzzer.

NJCU's offense picked up the pace in the fourth, tallying 18 points and once again closing the gap to six. Montclair was able to respond to the run and give themselves a double-digit lead down the stretch to hold onto the win.
