Men's Soccer Draws Rutgers-Camden, 1-1

CAMDEN, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer team battled to a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Rutgers-Camden on Saturday afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action at the Camden Athletic Complex.

The Gothic Knights (4-9-3, 1-4-1 NJAC) picked up a valuable NJAC point on the road behind a strong defensive performance and timely goal scoring, while Rutgers-Camden (6-6-3, 3-2-1 NJAC) maintained its position in the middle of the NJAC standings. The draw is the first time since 2011 that the Gothic Knights secured points against the Scarlet Raptors.

Both sides opened the match cautiously, feeling each other out during a tightly contested first half. The Scarlet Raptors held a slight edge in possession and outshot the Gothic Knights 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes, but goalkeeper Camilo Pascual Verdu stood tall between the posts, making a pair of key saves to keep the game level.

Coming out of the break, the Gothic Knights wasted little time breaking the deadlock. In the 49th minute, Javier Peña pounced on a loose rebound inside the box and slotted it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season, giving NJCU a 1–0 lead.

Rutgers-Camden answered quickly, finding the equalizer less than two minutes later. Eric Swen received a through ball from Nik Grello and finished into the lower corner to make it 1–1 in the 51st minute. The Scarlet Raptors continued to press forward, but NJCU's defense held firm under pressure.

Pascual Verdu finished the day with four saves, including two crucial stops late in the second half that preserved the draw. Offensively, Max Bzuikiewicz was active throughout, recording three of the team's seven total shots.
