Men's Soccer Draws TCNJ 1-1 on Senior Day

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Wednesday afternoon at Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

NJCU (4-9-4, 1-4-2) out shot the Lions, 15-12, while also leading the way with four corners to two. Augusto Vieira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) led the team with four shots, putting two on frame, while Tristan Bastos (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and Jona Caballero (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) added two each. In net, Camilo Pascual Verdu tallied six saves, including a massive penalty kick save. TCNJ (8-3-5, 3-2-2) was led by Matt Will's four shots, with Chris Meder following with two.

The Lions struck first in the 16th minute when Matt Will found the back of the net off of a cross by Meder. Meder flew down the left flank and sent in a line drive cross to the sprinting head of Will, who beat Pasual Verdu to the top left corner for the game's opening goal. TCNJ nearly doubled its lead later in the half on a penalty kick, but Pascual Verdu came up big with a diving stop to deny Meder from the spot.

The Gothic Knights responded just before halftime via a free kick just outside the box. In the 45th minute, senior defender Kevin Alves (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) capitalized on a free kick, sending home the equalizer for his second goal of the season to make it 1-1 heading into the break.

The second half featured an aggressive pace with multiple scoring chances for both sides. NJCU pressed heavily, recording 13 shots in the period and finishing the match with a 15-12 advantage in total attempts. Despite TCNJ going down a man in the 63rd minute after Lawrence Mancino was issued his second yellow card, the Gothic Knights were unable to convert on several late opportunities.
