Women's Volleyball Plagued by Errors in 3-0 Loss to Montclair

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team fell to Montclair State University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-14), in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play on Thursday night at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.

NJCU (10-3, 1-2 NJAC) hit .010 as a team with 28 kills. Kai Fitzpatrick (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough High School) led the Gothic Knights with a match-high 16 kills and nine digs, while Diane Pugay (Jersey City, N.J./Infinity Institute) added nine kills, two aces, and two block assists. Rae Marrero (Medford, NY/Patchogue Medford)  paced the offense with 27 assists, while Elisabeth Brito (Jersey City, N.J./Union City) anchored the defense with a team-high nine digs. Montclair State (12-3, 2-1 NJAC) was led by Breanna Craig, who hit .583 with seven kills and three block assists, while Sofia DiProfio chipped in five kills and a .364 hitting percentage.

In the opening set, NJCU kept pace early before Montclair State built separation with a string of service aces and key blocks, pulling ahead 17-8. Fitzpatrick registered six kills in the frame, but the Red Hawks closed strong to secure the 25-15 win.

The second set was NJCU's best stretch of the night, as Pugay and Fitzpatrick combined for 11 kills to keep the Gothic Knights within striking distance. After trailing 19-13, NJCU used an ace from Genesis Hibbard (Groesbeck, Texas/Morristown (N.J.)) and a killy by Pugay to cut the deficit to five. Montclair, however, answered with timely offense from Craig and DiProfio to hold off the late push, 25-19.

Montclair State controlled the third set from the outset, capitalizing on NJCU errors to build an early 12-7 lead. Despite kills from Fitzpatrick and Pugay, the Red Hawks' balance at the net proved too much as they secured the sweep with a 25-14 victory.
