Women's Basketball Falls to Division I Stony Brook in Non-Conference Matchup

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's basketball program dropped a non-conference contest to NCAA Division I Stony Brook University on Monday, December 1, falling 85–38 at Stony Brook Arena.

The Gothic Knights (2-3, 1-0 NJAC) shot 30.4% (14-46) from the floor, 28.6% (4-14) from three-point range, and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Stony Brook (3-6) countered with 50.7% shooting (37-73), including 10 made threes, and forced 24 NJCU turnovers. The Seawolves capitalized for 28 points off giveaways and controlled the interior with a 50-10 edge in points in the paint. Despite the result, NJCU continued to show defensive intensity, finishing with a 6-2 advantage in blocked shots.

Sophomore guard Meghan Gentile (Roseland, N.J./Immaculate Conception) led NJCU with a strong offensive outing, scoring 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-9 from long distance, while adding five rebounds and an assist. Sophomore guard Kaylah Neal (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) provided another steady presence, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Junior forward Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) logged all 40 minutes and contributed four rebounds, two steals, and two points at the line. Junior guard Na'tori Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Charter) and sophomore forward Dasani Talley Dorman (Camden, N.J./Woodbury Junior-Senior) combined for eight points, while Postell added a team-high two steals.

Stony Brook placed four scorers in double figures, led by Diaka Berete with 21 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Nal'la Bennett scored 18 points with four assists, while Caitlin Frost posted a 10-point, nine-rebound, five-assist performance.

The Seawolves jumped out quickly, using back-to-back three-pointers from Berete to take a 14-4 advantage midway through the first quarter. Postell accounted for all four NJCU points during that stretch. Neal supplied all six NJCU points to close the period, but Stony Brook held a 23-10 lead after 10 minutes.

A 13-6 Seawolves run to open the second quarter extended the deficit to 36-16, and Stony Brook entered halftime ahead 50-21 after scoring the final eight points of the half. Gentile tallied seven second-quarter points, while Neal added four more as the Gothic Knights continued to battle.

Stony Brook scored the first basket of the third to push the margin to 30, but NJCU responded with an 8-0 run fueled entirely by Seawolf turnovers. Gentile buried back-to-back threes as part of an 11-point quarter, but Stony Brook closed on an 11-3 run to take a 72-34 lead into the fourth.

The opening minutes of the final frame were scoreless until another Berete three extended the Stony Brook advantage. Talley Dorman provided NJCU's first field goal of the quarter on a fast-break layup at 4:39, then added a jumper out of a Stony Brook timeout. The Seawolves, however, closed the game on a 7-0 run to seal the final score.
