Gentile & Postell Lead Gothic Knights Past Scarlet Raiders, 68-60

JERSEY CITY, NJ | New Jersey City University remained perfect in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play, using a massive 54–38 rebounding edge and frequent visits to the free-throw line to pull away from Rutgers-Newark 68–60 on Wednesday night in the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center, moving to 2–0 in the NJAC.

NJCU (3-3, 2-0 NJAC) dominated the glass behind a monster 14-rebound, 10-point effort from Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and 11 more from Bailey Cassell (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight). The Gothic Knights went 27-of-31 from the stripe, including 14-of-16 in the fourth, while holding the Scarlet Raiders to just four field goals over the final 10 minutes. Na'Tori Postell and Meghan Gentile (Roseland, N.J./Immaculate Conception) poured in 18 points apiece, Gentile on 6-of-15 shooting with three triples and Postell going 6-of-7 at the line. Kaylah Neal (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) added 10 points, including two big threes. Rutgers-Newark (2-6, 0-2 NJAC) got 18 points and seven steals from Sanaa Brodie and 18 points from Quanajah Felder, but shot just 19-of-56 from the floor and turned it over 20 times.

The opening quarter was back-and-forth through the first five minutes until the Scarlet Raiders used an 8-0 run to grab hold of the lead. NJCU responded with a 5-0 run of its own, highlighted by a three-point bucket by Gentile, to take a two-point deficit into the second stanza.

Through the first four minutes of the second half, Rutgers-Newark was able to keep NJCU at bay, but a triple by Neal knotted the game at 21. The Gothic Knights used that momentum to take the lead, but were unable to extend it past four, as the Scarlet Raiders tied it with a pair of free throws by Sanaa Brodie before the half.

Rutgers-Newark surged out of the gates in the second half and pushed its lead out to six, 42-36, before squandering it late, thanks to a pair of free throws from John. Felder would pull the Scarlet Raiders back ahead with a layup with 29 seconds remaining before the end of the third quarter.

The Gothic Knights opened the final period on a 16-4 run, capped by a pair of Neal free throws to go up 63–52. Rutgers-Newark never got closer than eight the rest of the way as NJCU kept attacking the rim, drawing fouls, and crashing the offensive glass (25 offensive rebounds total) while the Scarlet Raiders went cold from the field.
