NJCU Drops Five-Set Match to Rival, Rutgers-Newark, 3-2

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Gothic Knights men's volleyball squad dropped a five-set thriller to rivals, Rutgers-Newark, on Tuesday, February 18 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center, 3-2 (25-19, 25-18, 25-23, 25-16, 15-10).

NJCU (5-6) hit .186 as a team with a high of .370 in the third set which saw 13 kills. Marcus Pardasie (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) recorded a team-high 15 kills and 9 digs while Alex Casais (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) dished out 37 assists, moving him to 9th all-time in the NJCU record books. Defensively, Nate Aguilar (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) paced the team with three block assists. Rutgers-Newark (10-4) hit .286 as a team led by freshman Massino Roco's career-high 18 kills. Derek Au was a threat all over the court as he collected 41 assists and hit .889 with eight kills.

The Gothic Knights jumped out to a 12-7 lead behind kills from Justin Walker (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Charter) and Pardasie. They then followed up with a 6-1 run to extend their lead thanks to kills by Aguilar and Matt Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack). Rutgers-Newark rallied towards the end of the set, using a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 24-19. Pardasie slammed the door on the rally with a kill to put NJCU up 1-0 in the match.

Rutgers-Newark flipped the script in the second set and similarly to the Gothic Knights in the first set, took a 13-7 lead. Down 20-11, an ace by Peralta sparked a 4-0 run before a service error gave the ball back to Rutgers-Newark. Trailing by seven Victor De Souza (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) tried to rally the troops with a kill but the Gothic Knights couldn't capitalize as the Scarlet Raiders closed out the set and evened the match at one.

Building off of the momentum from their win the in second set, Rutgers-Newark built a 4-0 lead to start the third set behind two service aces from Au. NJCU settled into the set and eventually tied it at 12 via a De Souza kill. With Rutgers-Newark's offense struggling, the Gothic Knights saw an opportunity to take the lead and tallied three straight points to take a two-point, 16-14, lead. The Scarlet Raiders rallied and tied the set at 22 before Aguilar put NJCU back in front. Despite a late service error the Gothic Knights remained poised and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

NJCU held an early lead in the fourth set, however, their offense went dormant as Rutgers-Newark went on a 16-3 run that blew the set open in their favor. Down by 10, NJCU tried to climb back into the set with a pair of kills by Aguilar but they ran out of steam as the Scarlet Raiders forced a fifth set.

The Gothic Knights took charge to open the fifth set, scoring two straight points to take a 2-1 lead. Rutgers-Newark, however, responded with a 7-2 run that forced NJCU into a timeout. Out of the time, the Gothic Knights cut the lead down to two before Rutgers-Newark scored three unanswered to push its lead out to five. With NJCU making one last push, with kills by Peralta and Aguilar, Au picked up three straight kills to steal the win from the Gothic Knights.
