Men's Volleyball Sweeps Skyline Tri-Match Over Ramapo & Manhattanville

MAHWAH, NJ - The Gothic Knights swept their opening Skyline tri-match of the season this afternoon with a 3-1 win over Ramapo and a 3-0 sweep of Manhattanville.

Match 1: NJCU 3, Ramapo 1 (25-23, 25-17, 30-28, 25-23)

NJCU (6-6, 1-0) picked up its 8th win against Ramapo all-time and 5th straight. As a team, the Gothic Knights hit .310 with a match-high .390 in set one. Matt Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) had a career match with 22 kills on .436 hitting while Alex Casais (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) tallied 55 assists, coming just two short of his career-high (57). Marcus Pardasie (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) added 16 kills and 10 digs alongside Anthony Matute's (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Charter) 14 digs. Ramapo (4-6, 0-1) was led by Brady Cascone's 18 kills and 10 digs. Jojo Meyer secured 51 assists and a block.

Ramapo surged to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before an error gave the Gothic Knights their first point of the game. NJCU trailed 14-8 before Matute tallied a kill that sparked a 5-1 run that cut the lead down to 15-13. A kill by Victor De Souza (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) later in the set laid the groundwork for the Gothic Knights to take the lead. Three straight Ramapo errors followed De Souza's kill, putting NJCU ahead 20-19. Casais snuck a kill over the net to tie it at 22 before three straight points put NJCU ahead 1-0.

NJCU took a 6-3 lead with two kills from Peralta and one by Pardasie. Ramapo remained within striking distance until Peralta stretched the lead to six, 17-11. The Roadrunners didn't let the set get out of reach as they came within two, 18-16, behind a kill from Meyer. NJCU responded with a 7-1 run capped by a service ace by Casais.

The third set was back and forth until the halfway point where Ramapo grabbed hold, using a 5-1 run to take a four-point lead, 16-12. NJCU chipped away at the lead until they knotted it at 23. The Gothic Knights were on the cusp of winning the set until Ramapo ended the set with a 4-1 run to force a 4th set.

Ramapo carried that momentum into the 4th set and jumped out to a large, six-point lead, 12-6. Once again, NJCU was up for the challenge and kept themselves within range until an 8-1 run sparked by a block from Justin Walker (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Charter). Ramapo nearly forced extra points but Pardasie slammed home the match-winning kill.

Match 2: NJCU 3, Manhattanville 0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-17)

NJCU (7-6, 2-0) remained red-hot in the final match of the day and hit .341 as a team, tallying 10+ kills in each set. Peralta didn't waver in the second match and led the team again with 15 kills while Pardasie added 10. Casais dished out 29 assists while Damon LaSalle (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) secured an ace and a block assist. Manhattanville (2-12, 0-2) was led by Emil Medrano's 10 kills and Mason Moon's 29 assists.

NJCU quickly took a 7-3 lead thanks to kills from Casais, Peralta, and Walker. Manhattanville came within two before a 6-1 run stretched NJCU's lead to seven. The Gothic Knights remained in front and held off any Manhattanville surge to secure a 1-0 lead in the match.

A battle ensued in the second set and Manhattanville came out ahead
18-17. Down by one, NJCU scored three unanswered with kills from Pardasie and Peralta. The Gothic Knights remained one step ahead of Manhattanville for the remainder of the set to close out with a 3-1 run.

NJCU used a strong opening to take an 11-5 lead where Nate Aguilar (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) tallied three kills. Emil Medrano tallied a kill for Manhattanville, cutting the lead down to five. A service error put the ball back on NJCU's side where the Gothic Knights took a 19-11 lead. Errors plagued Manhattanville down the stretch, allowing NJCU to close out the match.

FROM HEAD COACH CARLO EDRA
"Opening up conference play with two wins is a good weekend. It always feels good to get a win against Ramapo. This has been a rivalry since I was playing for NJCU back in 2004 and beyond. We are not where we need to be yet but were are taking big steps in the right direction."
