Softball Sweeps Baruch, 10-7 & 11-9

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Gothic Knights softball program extended their win streak over Baruch College to three this afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex with a 10-7 and 11-9 win. The sweep improves NJCU's record against Baruch to 24-5 all-time.

Game 1: NJCU 10, Baruch 7

NJCU (7-2) scattered 14 hits in the win led by Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) who finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Villanueva topped six Gothic Knights to tally a pair of hits while two of those six also recorded two RBI each in Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) and Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne). In the circle, Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (3-1) collected three strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits. Baruch (4-5) used 10 hits to plate seven runs and played clean softball with no errors.

NJCU set the tone early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning behind a Villanueva bases-clearing double. Baruch responded in the top of the second inning with a run of their own, after Mia Faddah hit a leadoff double. After advancing on a wild pitch, Faddah was brought him via a sacrifice fly by Campanelli.

The third inning saw explosive scoring from both teams. After holding the Gothic Knights scoreless in the bottom of the second frame, Baruch took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third behind three runs. The Bearcats benefitted from four NJCU errors which allowed them to gain the lead. NJCU bounced back in the bottom of the frame, however, plating five runs highlighted by a two-RBI double by Barrios. Barrios wouldn't remain on the pillows for long as she stole third and was immediately brought home by Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) who singled to left field. Cammarata capped the scoring for the Gothic Knights with an infield single to score Hanlon and catapult NJCU into the lead, 8-4.

The Gothic Knights added runs in the 4th and 6th to hold off a three-run surge by the Bearcats in the 5th and 6th innings.

Game 2: NJCU 11, Baruch 9

NJCU (8-2) used 14 hits to plate 11 runs in the second game and survived a four-run rally in the top of the 7th to pick up its 8th win of the season. Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (2-0) tallied two strikeouts and allowed 9 runs on 12 hits. Hanlon paced the Gothic Knights, going 3-for-4 with three RBI while Mendolla finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Baruch (4-6) picked up four RBI from Campanelli and three hits by Johnson.

There was no easing into the second game as six combined runs were scored in the first inning. Baruch started the second game off with two runs via a Faddah RBI double which put her in scoring position. Campanelli swiftly brought her home with an RBI single. NJCU responded with four runs, using four straight hits to bring home three runs. Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) rounded out the scoring with an RBI ground out.

Both teams went scoreless in the second before opening the floodgates once again in the third. Baruch scattered four hits and scored three runs to briefly jump ahead of the Gothic Knights, 5-4. Emma Growchowski sparked the scoring in the bottom of the frame, driving home Abigail Castrol via a fielder's choice. Hanlon remained red-hot and used an RBI double to score Fulton who reached earlier on a double.

The Gothic Knights' bats remained hot as they scored another three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to take an 11-5 lead heading into the seventh. Baruch nearly forced the game into the bottom of the seventh when they scored four runs before popping out to Fulton to end the game with bases loaded.
