Softball Stumbles Against John Jay in Non-Conference Twinbill

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team dropped its first doubleheader of the season, falling to John Jay at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

Game 1: John Jay 8, NJCU 1

NJCU (8-3) had its three-game win streak snapped by John Jay (6-1) this afternoon behind 12 hits from the Bloodhounds. Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (3-2) hurled four innings and allowed five earned runs on eight hits. Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) finished 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI while reigning NJAC Rookie of the Week, Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional), finished 1-for-3. John Jay was led by Riley Sandel who finished 3-for-3 with an RBI while Alyssa Cadolino tallied a game-high three RBI.

The Bloodhounds opened their scoring ledger in the top of the 1st, plating two runs via a two RBI single by Cadolino. John Jay extended its lead to three in the top of the 3rd before NJCU brought in its lone run of the game.

Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) hit a two-out single and was advanced by Doyle who singled to left field. Olden didn't have to wait long as Villanueva drove her home with an RBI single to right center. The Bloodhounds opened the floodgates in the 4th, scoring four runs backed by a fielding error by the Gothic Knights. John Jay added an insurance run in the 6th to push its lead to 8-1 before blanking the Gothic Knights to take game one.

Game 2: John Jay 12, NJCU 5

NJCU (8-4) suffered its second loss of the day despite hitting three homers. Emily Cammarata (Matawan , N.J./Matawan Regional) led the Gothic Knights, going 3-for-4 with a run scored while Villanueva finished 1-for-3 with three RBI. In the circle, Elyze  Lopez (2-2) pitched four innings with two strikeouts and seven hits allowed. John Jay (7-1) was led by Sandel who finished 3-for-4 with five RBI while five other Bloodhounds tallied two hits each.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bloodhounds opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd with two runs. Castro responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo homer, her first of the season.

John Jay built upon its lead with three runs over the next two innings highlighted by a two RBI double by Sandel. Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) tallied her first homer of the season, over the center field wall to cut the lead down to three. The Bloodhounds took full control of the game in the final two innings when they scored seven runs. Villanueva tried to rally the Gothic Knights with a three-run homer, however, that's where the rally would end for NJCU.
