Freshmen Duo Lead Softball Past Saint Elizabeth

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Led by Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) and Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland), the New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team swept Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday, March 22 at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, 11-10 and 8-0.

Game 1: NJCU 11, SEU 10

NJCU (9-4) scattered 12 hits and scored 11 runs led by Hanlon who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Doyle wasn't far behind, finishing 2-for-4 with 3 RBI while Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) (2-for-4) and Emily Cammarata (Matawan , N.J./Matawan Regional) (2-for-4) added two hits. In the circle, Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (4-2) picked up her fourth win in 6.1 innings of action with one strikeout. SEU (9-4) registered five errors and 17 hits in the loss. Garcia finished 4-for-4 with 4 RBI while Stewart and Reyes each tallied three hits.

The Eagles were quick to tally runs in game one as they took advantage of two walks and two wild pitches alongside a timely single by Garcia to take a 2-0 lead. NJCU responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs. Hanlon started the Gothic Knights off with a bunt before Doyle tripled to center field to send Hanlon back to the dugout. The errors for the Eagles began in the first inning which allowed two more runs to cross for the Gothic Knights.

An error brought another Gothic Knight run in before an explosive third inning broke the game open for NJCU. In the third, the Gothic Knights used six hits to plate six runs aided by a pair of errors by the Eagles. Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) scored the second run of the inning, bringing home Mendolla with an RBI triple. Cammarata and Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) hit back-to-back singles to bring in a run before the Gothic Knights brought in two more runs later in the inning.

The fourth inning signaled a four-inning scoring rally by the Eagles that brought them within one run by the top of the seventh after scoring four runs. Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) came in to close out the game and forced a fielder's choice and a flyout to end the game.

Game 2: NJCU 8, SEU 0 (5 inn.)

NJCU (10-4) used 9 hits to score eight runs and committed two errors. Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (3-0) hurled 60 pitches in five innings with three strikeouts.  Four different Gothic Knights tallied two hits, led by Hanlon who paced the team with 2 RBI. SEU (9-5) was held to five hits and was once again plagued by errors, tallying three in the game.

Doyle sparked the scoring for the Gothic Knights in the bottom of the first, tallying an RBI double before Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) brought Doyle home with an RBI single. NJCU tallied a run in the third after being held scoreless in the second and then added three more runs in the fourth. Two errors allowed the Gothic Knights to plate all three runs to set up the game-winning pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to complete the sweep.
